Backing up WordPress revisited

Backing up WordPress revisited

For backing up of WordPress sites, I have been using a myriad of backup strategies which rely on a couple of SaaS services. One of the services is Dropbox. I have been enjoying the perks of a rather outsized Dropbox space limits for a free account. Due to tie-ups with HTC in the past, I had received a fair bit of space from them. This additional storage space is time-limited and had since expired. Additionally, I had participated in the…

Taking over the reigns of WPUG.SG

Taking over the reigns of WPUG.SG

It seems that I am taking over the reigns of WPUG.SG, the Singapore WordPress User Group. WPUG.SG aims to be a community of WordPress publishers and developers who congregate to share and learn WordPress related ideas, stories and projects. After the last (and only) WordCamp and a few meet-ups after that in 2011, the organising efforts of meetups died out as the founding members drifted away into increasing work and studies responsibilities, me as well. The spark for a renewed WPUG.SG…

Shifting to Digitalocean VPS

Shifting to Digitalocean VPS

For the past couple of years, this site has been on Vodien shared hosting package. Not that there is an actual need to move, but I had to try out HHVM with WordPress when it was announced that WordPress 3.9 is compatible with HHVM. HHVM is developed by Facebook to optimise their website’s operations. It is claimed to be faster than the standard php-fpm package (and I have seen it so). Vodien shared hosting would not be the right platform…

Websites maintenance

Websites maintenance

Cherlynn’s website was hacked on Boxer’s Day. She messaged me while I was about to pack up and leave school for dinner with a friend, saying that she could not access her WordPress backend as usual. I went into overdrive and access to her cPanel directly. I did not have the site checked out until I saw this: The user_email had been changed. I had it replaced with an email under my control and reset the password through the WordPress system…

Away…

Away…

The frequency of the posts here has significantly decreased. But this does not means that I am abandoning this blog. Not after I have just settled my dues with my webhost. Rather, I am now busying with school (as usual) and unexpected developments. My attention has turned to my choir blog – www.smuchamberchoir.com. And yes, it is on wordpress (self-host) as well. It is an idea that has been incubating, rather, stagnating with the previous blog – chamberchoir.wordpress.com (which I…

Of: Spam comments

Of: Spam comments

The Akismet system is not totally fool-proof. Yet I trust it complete when they mark certain comments as spam. And I would click on Empty Spam without second thoughts. However, there are hams among it. And that’s a problem to me. I clicked on the Empty Spam button this morning as usual. It was a split second later I thought I recognised that one of the spam may be a ham. By then, it was too late to retrieve the…

Expected outage

Expected outage

WordPress 3.0 is out! That  means I have to upgrade my blog engine. In fact, it is begging for me to upgrade now. I have set up, somehow, two domains for this blog. It will take time and effort to undo it and redo it. So do expect outage that lasts for a day anytime during this weekend. I am also deciding whether to edit this theme or edit the new default theme for a new look. Oh well….

Site woes

Site woes

For the past few days and for the coming weeks, there will be outages on my blog. It is not the server problem, but more of my own doing. This domain has shift house from being a main domain to an addon domain. It resides in a sub-domain, http://blog.robertsky.com/. It has been set up in a way that this blog can be accessed by both http://brokenshardz.net and http://blog.robertsky.com/. As the Chinese New Year approaches, I hope to draw more inspiration…

Woopra Chat

Woopra Chat

Recently, I have used Woopra as my forth statistic tool for this blog. Yes I am that manic about stats. Anyway, Woopra is one kick-ass program. It uses the usual javascript codings and Java to deliver real-time statistics straight on the desktop. I get a kick from looking at the pinging dots on the world map, which signify people going through page after page on the site. Not only that, there is a live chatting function! I can chat with visitors in…

Social Media Exposure Fail

Social Media Exposure Fail

(Click on image to enlarge) Sorry to whoever who wrote the above comment. But… I do not have the time in November to attend events. Or rather, I do not know what will be my timetable like for the coming month and I do not want to complicate my schedule unnecessarily. Learn something about social media please. Although I am not an expert on this subject, as a normal blogger, I am kind of offended that you posted a comment…
