How to answer questions during presentation during Q&A

q&a One summer term;

Two modules;

There are presentations and presentations. And what is feared the most is the Q&A section after each presentation. And the typical way to start the answering or adding on goes something:

“Erm. Ya.. … [Answer] …”

  • Repeat the question before you answer. It gives you time to think.
    Take 2-3 seconds before you answer it. Those 2-3 seconds would seem like forever, but it isn’t.
    Never start with “Erm. Ya..”
    If you don’t know how to answer the questions, just say “That’s a very good question. I don’t have an answer for that right now but if you leave me your contact, I’ll get back to you on that.”
    If a question takes very long to answer, just say “I’ll take this question after the presentation.”

    • Precisely the point. However, from what I feel, it is more of the fear of public speaking for some students. Most presenters do have the answers.

      Personally, I would rephrase the question into a starting point for me. Like a presentation that I have just done. Question was something on one-child policy in China. My answer was, "OK, with regards to one-child policy in China, this is my take … [yada, yada] …"

      Do note that I started off with "OK", and that is due to fear of public speaking.
