UTF-8 Woes

UTF-8 Woes

In my FYP project, we have to deal with UTF-8 encoded data. Database was set to utf-8 charset by the client’s database developer. My localhost server was set to utf-8 as well. But the display would come out grabbled text.  So text like, 동방신기 will appear like ë™ë°©ì‹ ê¸°.  So what went wrong? To be frank I have no idea. This gotten fixed when I input the first line into my .htaccess script: AddDefaultCharset UTF-8 RewriteEngine on RewriteCond $1 !^(index.php|images|assets|user_guide|robots.txt)…

The Evolving Emoticons

The Evolving Emoticons

Apparently the Japanese netizens are not satisfied with their current diverse set of emoticons. They are evolving and with more complexity. Short of saving the new emoticons as templates, I wonder how they use the evolved emoticons in their daily conversations. This, (◉◞౪◟◉), has characters from geometric shapes unicode set and Tegulu script. Whereas, ( ;ω;), has the Greek Small Letter for Omega. And even Wikipedia’s comprehensive list of unicode characters fails to resolve what characters have been used in…

Tech on the Net: Cooliris & RecordTV

Tech on the Net: Cooliris & RecordTV

Cooliris Cooliris, until 26th July 2012, was a service that allows you to run a gallery of photos and images right from your browser. Cooliris has now repurposed the 3D wall technology that it has been offering to the desktop users to the mobile domain. They no longer offer the functionality through the browsers, except for Firefox 7 to 10 (the current Firefox version is 14). It is rather a shame that they decided the switch. I tried the application…

Review: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover

Review: Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover

A few weeks ago, I received Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover for review. The keyboard is meant for iPad, and yet I readily accepted it since I had just acquired a loaned iPad unit from my FYP sponsor for development purpose anyway. The Ultrathin Keyboard is connects via Bluetooth to the iPad and promises six-month battery life. When I took out the unit, I did not bother with charging for the keyboard and it last just fine till the end of…

The Trigger to Learn to Play Piano?

The Trigger to Learn to Play Piano?

Today, I walked into the office of the FYP sponsor with a rather good vibe. That vibe was enhanced by this piece of music on 8tracks stream, which I accidentally left running in the background: Now, I feel like hitting the keys on the piano that was somehow brought to home months ago. But before that, I have to polish my long forgotten, already rusty, mediocre piano skills. :X Hopefully, the following tutorial helps: And oh, the music steam on…

Catching Up on Blogging

Catching Up on Blogging

So apparently, I gotten busy to the point that I am neglecting this blog. Very bad, very bad. :X Currently, I am working on my FYP project. My team is creating an iPad application which displays personalised feeds on kPop news. The personalisation factor would include the user’s ranking of artists and user’s interactions with the application. At the same time, I am developing a custom CMS for one of my CCAs. Why customised? It is a part of on…
